Sample question
This question tests IUPAC nomenclature across several homologous series.
a. Give the IUPAC name of each of the following compounds. (3 marks)
i. CH3CH(CH3)CH2CH2OH
ii. CH3COCH2CH2CH3
iii. CH3CH2CONH2
b. Write the semi-structural (condensed) formula of each of the following compounds. (2 marks)
i. 2,3-dimethylbutanoic acid
ii. 2-methylpropan-1-amine
c. A student incorrectly names the compound CH3CH(OH)CH2CH3 as 'butan-3-ol'. Give the correct IUPAC name and state the numbering rule that the student has broken. (1 mark)

Answer: Worked solution
a.i. 3-methylbutan-1-ol. The longest chain containing the OH carbon has four carbons (butan-). Numbering from the OH end places the OH on C1 and the methyl branch on C3.
a.ii. Pentan-2-one. The chain has five carbons (pentan-) with a C=O group within the chain (a ketone). Numbering from the end nearer the carbonyl gives it the lowest locant, C2.
a.iii. Propanamide. The chain has three carbons including the carbon of the CONH2 group, which is named with the suffix -amide; the carbonyl carbon is C1 so no locant is needed.
b.i. CH3CH(CH3)CH(CH3)COOH. The COOH carbon is C1 of the butanoic acid chain, so the two methyl branches sit on C2 and C3.
b.ii. (CH3)2CHCH2NH2 (equivalently CH3CH(CH3)CH2NH2). The parent is propan-1-amine with the NH2 on C1 and a methyl branch on C2.
c. The correct name is butan-2-ol. The chain must be numbered from the end that gives the principal functional group (the OH) the lowest possible locant, so the carbon bearing the OH is C2, not C3.
