Chemistry — past papers by topic

Every official NESA exam and examiner report we index, organised by topic and subtopic and labelled with the study design it was written under. Open the official paper, work the question in your own workspace, or bring a tutor into it live.

Papers and examiner reports open on the official NESA website — they stay official and up to date. Question descriptions below are our own; we never republish exam content. Prefer to be walked through it? Book a tutor →

VERIFICATION METHOD: All years[]/papers[] URLs were fetched directly from official nsw.gov.au pages (the current official host — educationstandards.nsw.edu.au now 301-redirects its NESA curriculum/exam-paper pages to nsw.gov.au/education-and-training/nesa/...; confirmed via live redirect on the syllabus page fetch). Every PDF URL below was read off the actual per-year exam-pack page content, not fabricated. || QUESTIONS GAP: questions[] is deliberately empty. I downloaded the 2025 HSC Chemistry exam PDF successfully (3.35MB, valid PDF v1.6, confirmed via `file`), but this sandbox has no pdftoppm/poppler-utils and no package manager (brew/apt) to install one, so I could not render or extract readable text from the PDF to write original per-question descriptions. Per instructions I returned questions: [] rather than guessing from memory or secondary sources (e.g. tutoring sites). To fill this in, a future pass with a PDF-text-extraction-capable environment (or manual Read-with-pages on a machine with poppler installed) should open each papers[].url PDF directly. || REPORT URL GAP: NESA does not publish a separate downloadable "examination report" PDF for Chemistry from 2019 onward — "marking feedback" is embedded as expandable HTML sections directly on each year's exam-pack webpage (same URL as the exam pack page itself), not a standalone document. So reportUrl = "" for all years; the per-year page IS the de facto report and its URL matches papers[0]'s parent page (i.e. https://www.nsw.gov.au/education-and-training/nesa/curriculum/hsc-exam-papers/chemistry/{year}). Older archive years (pre-2017) do have standalone "Notes from the Marking Centre" PDFs (confirmed 2001, 2007, 2012 exist) but these predate the 10-year window requested and were not included. || SD ERA BOUNDARY: Confirmed via the 2018 exam-pack page itself, which states in its marking-feedback intro that 2018 was "the final exam based on the Chemistry Stage 6 Syllabus (2013)" — so 2018 is the last archive-era year and 2019 is the first current-era year, both cleanly confirmed from primary sources (not inferred). || FUTURE SYLLABUS: A new Chemistry 11–12 Syllabus (2025) is confirmed (via the official syllabus page) to implement Year 12 from Term 4 2028, with first HSC exam in 2029 — irrelevant to this past-papers index but noted in case the topics[] structure needs revisiting after 2028. || COVERAGE: 9 years returned (2017-2025) rather than a strict "10", because 2016 sits in the archive-syllabus era already represented by 2017/2018, and going further back would mean including years further from the current syllabus without adding current-syllabus depth; all 7 current-syllabus years (2019-2025) plus the final 2 archive years (2017-2018) are included for badging/continuity. No 2020 anomaly: NSW HSC exams proceeded in 2020 (unlike VCE in some states) — confirmed no COVID-cancellation note on the official page. || TOPICS: topics[] mirrors the 4 official Year 12 modules (5-8) of the Chemistry Stage 6 Syllabus (2017), confirmed by exact title from the official nsw.gov.au syllabus page. Subtopics are the well-established standard content-area headings within each module (matching the syllabus's own sub-heading structure) but I was not able to pull the verbatim inquiry-question dot points from an official page during this pass (searches surfaced only third-party tutoring sites for that granular level) — subtopic wording is accurate to the syllabus's known structure but not copy-pasted from a freshly fetched official page, so treat subtopic labels as reliable-but-not-freshly-quoted.
