Where to Buy WACE ATAR Notes and Practice Exams
Choose WACE notes and practice exams for the specific gap in your revision. ATARMAxxing offers WACE subject hubs with notes and model exams; compare a free preview with the official papers and other options below.
Short answer: for WACE ATAR courses, start with the free SCSA past examinations and marking keys. Buy a trial-exam pack when you need more papers in the WACE format, a printed study guide when you want condensed notes, a past-student set from a note marketplace if you prefer a student's summary, or an online subject hub if you want notes and many practice exams together. Most Western Australian students use the free papers plus one paid source per subject they are worried about.
One thing to know before you spend: most WACE-specific material comes from a small number of local publishers and a few national ones with WA editions. That means the same books and trial papers circulate widely, including through schools. Spending a few minutes asking your teacher what your school already provides can save you from buying something you will be handed anyway.
WACE ATAR examinations begin on 28 October 2026. If you are searching for where to buy WACE trial exams, the sections below cover the publishers students and schools use most.
Where can you get free official WACE papers?
The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) publishes past ATAR course examinations and marking keys free of charge. They are the most reliable guide to question style and mark allocation. These are official SCSA papers, not something ATARMAxxing sells; we list them by subject so they are quick to find.
Official reference: SCSA past examinations.
- WACE English official papers
- WACE Mathematics Methods official papers
- WACE Chemistry official papers
- WACE Human Biology official papers
- WACE Physics official papers
- WACE Psychology official papers
Every other subject is on the past papers index. Check each paper's year against your current syllabus before relying on it.
When should you choose printed guides or trial-exam packs?
Choose a printed guide for organised explanations, or a trial-exam pack when you need additional suitable papers.
- ATAR Notes publishes WACE course-notes books, also resold by several education retailers, and runs a free student forum. Published prices are on our ATAR Notes comparison.
- Trial-exam publishers such as Neap, Creelman and WA Exam Papers produce trial and practice exams in the WACE format. Many schools buy these to set as trials, which matters: ask your teacher which ones you will sit at school so you do not buy a paper you will see anyway.
- Cambridge Checkpoints and A+ study guides (Cengage) are worth checking for your subject; availability for WACE courses varies by title. See the Checkpoints comparison.
Printed guides are good for organised revision you can write on. Their limit is that each book holds a fixed number of questions.
What should you check before buying student notes?
Check the current syllabus, sample pages and the topics covered before buying student notes. A good set is short, clear and written by someone who has just sat your exam. Quality varies, and a result quoted in a listing is the seller's claim.
Look for a preview, the syllabus year and whether the notes cover both units.
What do ATARMAxxing WACE subject hubs include?
ATARMAxxing WACE hubs combine revision notes, model exams, practice questions and flashcards.
- 20 full-length model exams per Year 12 subject, written in the SCSA style, each with a mark-by-mark answer guide;
- 20 revision note sets for the course;
- 64 practice questions with worked solutions;
- 200 flashcards;
- a free preview of every subject, and free notes to download first.
It is a one-time payment per subject with no subscription. The list price is A$40 per subject, and the pricing page shows the current offer. Other online platforms include Edrolo and Atomi, which are video-led and often arranged through schools, and StudyPulse, an all-subjects subscription.
See our Edrolo, Atomi and StudyPulse comparisons.
How should you use WACE resources before exams?
Whatever you buy, the method is sit, mark, fix. Sit a complete paper under exam conditions with the official working time and reading time. Mark it against the SCSA marking key, and record every mark you dropped and the reason.
Then fix those gaps before your next paper.
- First, recent SCSA examinations for the current syllabus. Keep one unseen for the last week if you can.
- Then the marking keys and any examiner commentary, which show what earned full marks and what was only partially credited.
- Then trial exams and practice papers from the source you chose, once the official supply is used up.
For ATAR courses, your final course score combines your school mark and your examination mark, and school marks are statistically moderated against how your school's cohort performs in the examination. That makes careful, timed practice in the SCSA format the single most valuable thing to buy if you buy anything at all.
A common mistake is buying a whole shelf of books in September. A better approach is to sit one recent SCSA paper per course this week, see which courses lost the most marks, and spend on those only. The scaling page can help you see where a few extra marks would count most.
How do you choose a WACE study resource?
Choose a resource that matches your course, explains its answers and lets you inspect a sample.
- Written for the current WACE syllabus: check the year on the cover or listing.
- Marked the way SCSA marks: a marking key that shows where each mark goes beats a bare answer list.
- Preview available: a sample before you pay.
- Per subject or subscription: with a few weeks left, pay only for the subjects you need.
