Answer: Worked solution

a. The first diamond is made up of the Discover phase and the Define phase. b. Divergent thinking opens the Discover phase: the designer widens the problem space by gathering broad research — conducting interviews and surveys, building audience/user personas, running competitor analysis and secondary research — generating many possible understandings of the problem rather than settling on one. Convergent thinking then closes the diamond in the Define phase: the designer analyses and synthesises that research, narrowing the many findings down to a single, clearly framed communication problem expressed in the brief and its design criteria (purpose, context, audience and constraints). So the first diamond moves from exploring the problem widely (divergent) to defining it precisely (convergent).
