Answer: Worked solution
a. Material culture is the physical, tangible objects and artefacts a group produces and uses - for example, a didgeridoo (or a smartphone). Non-material culture is the intangible elements of a culture: its values, beliefs, norms, language and symbols - for example, the belief in caring for Country (or the value of free speech). b. The two are interdependent because material objects carry, and are given meaning by, non-material culture. A didgeridoo is not just a wooden tube; its significance, the protocols for who may play it and the ceremonies it accompanies all derive from non-material beliefs and norms. Equally, a smartphone's physical design reflects non-material values such as individualism, connectivity and convenience. Each component only makes full sociological sense in light of the other.
