This paper covers
- Weapons of mass destruction as the committed global issue (Unit 3 AoS1): Iran's post-Twelve-Day-War enrichment escalation and E3 snapback sanctions (Aug-Sep 2025), IAEA verification breakdown (Feb 2026), North Korea's Ninth Party Congress nuclear expansion pledge and restored test site, India-Pakistan post-May-2025-clash arsenal growth and MIRV development, Syria's post-Assad chemical weapons disclosure crisis and OPCW reinstatement (July 2026), and the effectiveness of multilateral non-proliferation responses (IAEA, OPCW, UNSC, NPT) versus unilateral/bilateral tools (sanctions, snapback).
- Mass movement of people as the committed contemporary crisis (Unit 3 AoS2): Sudan's civil war driving the world's largest displacement crisis (2.8 million refugees, 9.1 million IDPs by end 2025), the Rohingya crisis's deepening protraction and deadly sea crossings (nearly 900 dead/missing in 2025), Afghanistan's mass forced deportation crisis from Pakistan and Iran (2.8 million returned in 2025), Gaza's internal displacement, and the effectiveness (and funding collapse) of UNHCR-led responses amid aid cuts.
- USA as the committed Indo-Pacific state (Unit 4 AoS1): the Trump administration's national interest pursuit through tariffs/trade coercion (effective tariff rate to ~27%, China de-escalation to Nov 2026), hard power posturing via AUKUS submarine delivery and record Indo-Pacific defence budget increases, soft power erosion from USAID/NED/USAGM funding cuts and Pew's 24-country favourability collapse (60% to 49%), the Quad's strained but functioning minilateral cooperation (May 2026 New Delhi meeting, critical minerals initiative), and internal/external constraints (tariff legal setbacks, alliance strain, China's asymmetric responses) on US effectiveness.
- Australia in the Indo-Pacific (Unit 4 AoS2, compulsory): Australia's national interest pursuit through AUKUS Pillar I/II, the 2025-26 bilateral Pacific security-treaty network (Pukpuk with PNG, Nakamal with Vanuatu) as a response to Chinese influence, Australia's role in the Quad and its critical minerals/maritime surveillance initiatives, and the significance of the US alliance and Pacific relationships to Australia's security and international standing.
- Integrated Section C synthesis: linking WMD proliferation responses to mass displacement drivers (Unit 3), and linking USA's Indo-Pacific power projection to Australia's national interest and alliance dependency (Unit 4), each requiring explicit evaluative judgement using named 2025-2026 evidence.
