VCE Geography study designareas of study explained

VCE Geography Units 3 and 4 examine two processes of land cover change, a fieldwork investigation of local land use change, and the dynamics of world population. Much of the work is interpreting real spatial data — topographic maps, satellite images, choropleths and population pyramids supplied with the paper — while the rest depends on case-study detail you bring yourself. Named places, quantified evidence and precise use of geographical concepts earn the marks.

VCE Geography Study Design (2022–2026)

Assessment is by School-assessed Coursework across the four areas of study, plus a single end-of-year written examination. The paper is a question and answer book paired with a data book of maps, photographs, graphs and statistics, and consists of nine compulsory questions worth 80 marks in total. Individual questions have ranged from six marks to twelve, the largest being the personalised fieldwork question where you supply your own site and research question. Some questions must be answered from the supplied data; others explicitly require examples independent of it.

Past papers on this subject span more than one study design. Papers written under an older one still work as practice, but the areas of study they test have changed — the index labels every paper with the study design it was set under.

The areas of study, one by one

Each area below lists the concepts named in the study design, what the VCAA exam asks of them, and the mistake that most often costs marks.

Unit 3, Area of Study 1: Land cover change

Land cover is the natural surface of the earth — forest, ice, grassland, wetland — as distinct from what people do on it. You open with a global overview of cover types and how their extent has shifted over time, then study two processes in depth: melting glaciers and ice sheets, and deforestation. For each you need the distribution (where it is happening and where it is not), the natural and human causes, and at least one named location studied closely enough to quote figures, dates and local detail. From there the focus turns to the impacts on environments and on people at those locations, then to responses at local, national and global scale — treaties, protected areas, reforestation programs, monitoring by satellite. The area of study closes by asking you to judge one global response for each process, which means weighing what it has actually achieved against what it set out to do.

What the exam asks

Expect map and data interpretation first: describe natural characteristics of a feature on a supplied topographic map, read a value off a choropleth, assess the strength of spatial association between two variables using stated data. Then explanation and evaluation — explain two interconnected causes at a location of your choice, or evaluate a geospatial technology for monitoring change, independent of the supplied resources.

Answering the 'own example' questions with the exam's supplied map. Where a question says your response must be independent of the resources provided, describing the data earns nothing — it needs your named case study, with its own figures and dates.

Unit 3, Area of Study 2: Land use change

Land use is what people do with land, and this area of study is built around your own fieldwork at a local site where that use has changed — farmland becoming housing, industry becoming apartments, bush becoming a road corridor. You frame a research question, then collect primary data in the field (field sketches, photographs, land use mapping, surveys, transects) and secondary data (census figures, historic aerial photographs, planning documents). Geospatial technologies matter here: GNSS to locate observations, GIS to layer and map them, remote sensing imagery to show the site before and after. You then explain the nature of the change, the processes driving it and its time sequence, and the impacts it has had on people and on the environment. The final requirement is evaluative: how well did each of your data sources actually answer the question you set?

What the exam asks

The fieldwork question is personalised and among the largest on the paper. It asks you to state your own location, connect the observed change to your research question, outline its time sequence, and evaluate how one type of data collection — primary or secondary — helped answer that question. Generic method description without your site's specifics scores poorly.

Where marks go missing

Writing about fieldwork technique in the abstract. The marks sit in the site: what changed, when, in what order, and which of your own collected data showed it. 'We used surveys' is worth nothing without what the surveys revealed.

Unit 4, Area of Study 1: Population dynamics

This area of study is the mechanics of population: where the world's people are, how quickly their numbers change, and why. You work with distribution and growth patterns at global scale, then with the two natural components — fertility and mortality — and how each has moved over time and varies between countries. Population structure is central: reading age–sex pyramids, describing the shape they take at different stages, and placing countries within the demographic transition model. Movement is the other half. You study internal migration, rural to urban and between regions, and international migration, along with the push and pull factors behind refugee and forced migration flows. It all converges on selected countries of origin and destination, where you trace how migration and natural change have altered population size and structure at both ends of the flow.

What the exam asks

Data questions dominate: compare the global share held by the youngest and oldest age brackets between two years, or describe how a projected structure differs from a historical one, using a supplied pyramid and age-breakdown chart. Extended parts then ask you to explain, for one named origin country and one named destination country, how international migration has driven population change.

Where marks go missing

Describing a pyramid instead of comparing it. Questions supplying two years want quantified difference — percentages, brackets, direction of change — not a shape-by-shape tour of each graph in turn.

Unit 4, Area of Study 2: Population issues and challenges

Here the focus narrows to two contrasting problems and what has been done about them. The first is a country with a growing population, where you study the strategies governments and organisations have used — family planning programs, incentives or restrictions, education, urban planning, resource management — and what each actually produced environmentally, economically and socially. The second is a country with an ageing population, where the issue is the shifting balance between working-age people and dependants: pension and healthcare costs, workforce shortages, aged care demand. A key point is that these impacts are not spread evenly; rural regions, particular age groups and lower-income households usually carry more of the burden than national averages suggest. Responses come from governments, organisations and individuals, and you finish by evaluating them across environmental, economic and social dimensions rather than declaring them simply successful or not.

What the exam asks

Questions are almost entirely case-study driven. Outline two government or policy strategies used in a selected country and discuss one category of impact each produced; or explain why the impacts of ageing fall unevenly across regions or groups. Named country, named policy, dated figures and a stated dimension of impact are what the marking rewards.

Where marks go missing

Naming a strategy without naming its impact category. If a question asks for environmental, economic or social impact, an answer that says what a policy did but never labels the dimension leaves the discussion marks unclaimed.

Geographical concepts and skills (cross-cutting, examinable in every question)

The key concepts — change, distribution, distance, place, spatial association, environment, sustainability, process, movement, scale, region and interconnection — are the vocabulary the whole study runs on, and they are examinable inside any question rather than on their own. Alongside them sit the skills: interpreting topographic maps, reading aerial photographs and satellite images, working with graphs, tables and statistics, and describing three-dimensional representations. Spatial association is the one that most often carries marks — the degree to which two distributions match, described in words and backed with paired data values taken from the resource. You also need to describe distribution patterns properly: where things concentrate, where they are absent, direction, extent and any anomalies. Geospatial technologies, meaning GNSS, GIS and remote sensing, appear as both a skill to use and a subject to evaluate.

What the exam asks

Skills are embedded rather than sectioned off. A question may ask you to describe two natural characteristics visible on a supplied map, read a percentage off a choropleth, or assess the strength of spatial association between elevation and forest loss using two data examples. Answers must quote the resource — figures, place names, directions — rather than gesture at the pattern.

Claiming a strong or weak spatial association without evidence. The marks are in the supporting data pairs: name two locations, quote both variables at each, and state whether the values rise and fall together.

Common questions

Which study design does VCE Geography currently follow?

The current VCE Geography study design applies from 2022 to 2026, covering land cover change, a fieldwork investigation of land use change, population dynamics, and population issues and challenges. Examinations from 2022 onwards were sat under it. Papers from 2017 to 2021 belong to the previous design and use a different question structure, although the map and data skills transfer directly.

How many questions are on the VCE Geography exam?

The written examination is made up of nine compulsory questions worth 80 marks in total, spread across the four areas of study. Individual questions range from shorter data-interpretation tasks to extended responses of around ten to twelve marks, including the personalised fieldwork question in which you write about your own investigation site.

Do I have to use my own case studies in the Geography exam?

Yes. Several questions state that your response must draw on a location you have studied and must not use the resources supplied in the data book. Others require you to use the supplied maps, imagery or statistics. Read that instruction every time, because answering from the wrong source loses the marks outright.

What is the fieldwork question in the VCE Geography exam?

One extended question is personalised. You nominate your own fieldwork location and research question from Unit 3 Area of Study 2, describe the land use change observed there and its time sequence, and evaluate how primary or secondary data helped answer your question. Prepare it as carefully as any case study, with dates, figures and named techniques.
