A 355 mL bottle of a craft beer contains 14.2 g of alcohol, 10.8 g of carbohydrate, and negligible protein and fat. Use the energy conversion factors alcohol = 29.3 kJ/g and carbohydrate = 16.7 kJ/g to answer the following.
- (a) Calculate the total energy, in kJ, provided by one bottle. (2 marks)
- (b) Calculate the percentage of this bottle's total energy that comes from alcohol, to the nearest whole per cent. (2 marks)

Answer: Worked solution
(a) Energy from alcohol = 14.2 g × 29.3 kJ/g = 416.1 kJ. Energy from carbohydrate = 10.8 g × 16.7 kJ/g = 180.4 kJ. Total energy = 416.1 + 180.4 = 596.5 kJ (accept 596–597 kJ).
(b) Percentage from alcohol = (416.1 ÷ 596.5) × 100 = 69.8%, rounded to 70%.
Mark allocation: (a) 1 mark for correctly calculating either the alcohol or carbohydrate energy component; 1 mark for the correct total energy with working shown. (b) 1 mark for the correct method (alcohol energy ÷ total energy × 100); 1 mark for the correct final percentage (70%). Total 4 marks.
