QCE Geography syllabusunits and topics explained

QCE Geography is a data subject as much as a places subject. You work with topographic maps, satellite imagery, climate graphs, population pyramids and choropleth maps to explain why hazards, land cover change and population shifts hit some places far harder than others. The external assessment covers Units 3 and 4 only, and rewards quantified spatial description tied to the processes behind the pattern.

QCAA Geography General Senior Syllabus (2025 v1.3, first assessed 2026)

Units 3 and 4 are assessed through school-marked internal assessments plus one external assessment: an examination described as a combination response and worth 25 per cent of the subject result, drawn only from Unit 3 and Unit 4 subject matter. QCAA publishes it as a question and response book, with a separate stimulus book in several years carrying the maps, images, tables and graphs the questions depend on. Items range from short responses interpreting that data through to an extended response requiring a sustained, evidence-based argument.

Past papers on this subject span more than one syllabus. Papers written under an older one still work as practice, but the units and topics they test have changed — the index labels every paper with the syllabus it was set under.

The units and topics, one by one

Each area below lists the concepts named in the syllabus, what the QCAA exam asks of them, and the mistake that most often costs marks.

Area 1 of 4

Unit 1 — Responding to risk and vulnerability in hazard zones

Unit 1 separates a hazard from a disaster: the event may be natural, but the damage is social. Topic 1 sorts natural hazards into geological, geomorphic and atmospheric types — earthquakes and volcanoes, landslides and floods, cyclones and severe storms — and asks where each occurs and why, using spatial patterns and the physical processes behind them. You then compare vulnerability and risk through case studies in a developed and a developing country, working with the idea that exposure, coping capacity and recovery differ sharply with wealth, governance and infrastructure. Topic 2 covers ecological hazard zones: the spread of a selected ecological hazard such as a disease or invasive species, its diffusion pathways, and its primary, secondary and tertiary impacts on affected communities.

What the exam asks

Unit 1 is a Year 11 unit and is not part of the external assessment. Internal tasks generally take the form of a data report or an examination on stimulus, where marks come from describing spatial patterns using direction, distance and scale, quantifying claims from the data supplied, and explaining vulnerability rather than listing impacts.

Where marks go missing

Describing a hazard's physical mechanism when the question asked about vulnerability. Vulnerability answers must name the human factors — population density, building standards, warning systems, income, governance — that turn the same magnitude event into very different outcomes.

Area 2 of 4

Unit 2 — Planning sustainable places

Unit 2 turns to where people live and whether those places work. Topic 1 examines the factors contributing to the liveability of a local Australian place — access to services, transport, employment, housing, green space, safety and social connection — and how each is measured. It is a fieldwork topic, so you collect primary data in your own area and use it to build an action proposal to improve liveability or sustainability. Topic 2 scales up to a megacity. You study the processes of urbanisation that produce cities of over ten million people, then take one megacity in Africa, Asia or South America as a case study and analyse its sustainable-development challenges — informal settlement, transport congestion, water and waste infrastructure, air quality and land pressure — with the strategies used to manage them.

What the exam asks

Unit 2 is not externally examined. School assessment centres on a fieldwork report and an investigation, judged on the quality of the primary data collected, whether the analysis genuinely uses that data, and whether the proposed action is feasible, specific to the place studied and evaluated against sustainability criteria.

Where marks go missing

Proposing an action that could be pasted into any town — plant more trees, improve public transport. The proposal must respond to a pattern your own fieldwork data actually showed, and name the site, cost or stakeholder that makes it real.

Area 3 of 4

Unit 3 — Responding to land cover transformations (Externally Assessed)

Unit 3 is externally assessed. Topic 1 maps the spatial distribution of global land cover types and the processes changing them: deforestation, land drainage, reclamation, resource extraction and agricultural intensification. You then link those transformations to climate change — how land cover alters albedo, carbon storage and the water cycle, what the observed climate trends show, and what the implications are for ecosystems and human systems. Topic 2 brings the same processes down to your own region through fieldwork. Using the geographic inquiry model, you define a local land or water management challenge, gather and represent spatial data on it, analyse the causes and effects, and propose a management action, then evaluate that action against environmental, economic and social considerations.

What the exam asks

Unit 3 subject matter is examinable. Expect short responses that read maps, satellite imagery, land cover tables and climate graphs — describing distributions and trends with figures, then explaining the process driving them — and extended items evaluating a management response to a land cover transformation using evidence taken from the stimulus.

Where marks go missing

Writing that land cover has decreased significantly without a number, a direction or a time frame. Data-interpretation marks go to quantified, located description — how much, where, and over what period — lifted straight from the stimulus supplied.

Area 4 of 4

Unit 4 — Managing population change (Externally Assessed)

Unit 4 is the other externally assessed unit and it is heavily quantitative. Topic 1 covers demographic concepts and models applied to Australia — birth and death rates, natural increase, fertility, life expectancy, dependency ratios, the demographic transition model and population pyramids — and the spatial patterns of demographic change those measures reveal, from ageing regional towns to fast-growing urban fringes. You then propose an action responding to a population challenge in an Australian place. Topic 2 goes global: the demographic processes and their interactions that produce patterns of population change, movement and distribution at global, regional and local scales, and the impacts on both places of origin and places of destination — labour supply, remittances, service pressure, ageing and cultural change.

What the exam asks

Unit 4 is examinable. Questions typically supply population pyramids, migration flow maps or demographic tables and ask you to describe the pattern, compare or calculate rates, explain the demographic processes producing the change, and evaluate a proposed response to a population challenge in a named place.

Where marks go missing

Reading a population pyramid as a snapshot only. Marks come from inferring the processes behind the shape — past fertility decline, a migration wave, a missing cohort — and stating the consequence for the place, not from calling the bars wide or narrow.

Common questions

Which units are examined in the QCE Geography external assessment?

Only Units 3 and 4 — Responding to land cover transformations, and Managing population change. Units 1 and 2, on hazard zones and sustainable places, are Year 11 units assessed inside your school. The exam is a combination response paper worth 25 per cent of your overall subject result.

Do I get a stimulus book in the QCE Geography exam?

In several years QCAA has published a separate stimulus book alongside the question and response book, carrying the maps, imagery, graphs and tables the questions are built on. Either way, the data you need is supplied in the exam, so the skill being tested is fast, accurate interpretation rather than recall of statistics.

What changed in the 2025 Geography syllabus?

The revised version applies to students completing the course in 2026 or later, with its first external assessment cohort in 2026. The unit and topic structure carries over, but the Communicating criterion requirements changed and explanations of biophysical and anthropogenic processes are expected in more detail. Check your school's current syllabus copy for the exact wording.

Does my Geography fieldwork get marked in the external exam?

Not directly. Fieldwork sits in Unit 2 Topic 1 and Unit 3 Topic 2 and is assessed through internal assessment. The external assessment does assume you can apply the geographic inquiry model and read primary-style spatial data confidently, so the fieldwork skills transfer even though your own site data is not examined.
