This paper covers
- Intertextual analysis of a highly allusive unseen poem drawing on classical (Virgil, Aeneid Book VI) and biblical (Book of Job, chapters 38-41) sources
- Text-centred theoretical approach: prosodic structure, stanzaic form, systematic negation, bilingual allusion, typological echo, and apophatic poetics
- World-context-centred theoretical approach: canonical ideology, cultural materialism, Augustan imperial ideology, the politics of Western literary inheritance, Bloom's clinamen
- Evaluation and synthesis: assessing relative productivity of text-centred vs world-context-centred frameworks and integrating both into a unified theorised argument
- Scholarly register and precise literary-critical metalanguage (intertextuality, hypertextuality, deixis, apophatic, clinamen, caesura) in extended academic writing
- Unit 3 Ways of reading: applying named theoretical frameworks (Kristeva, Genette, Jakobson, Williams, Eagleton, Bloom) to an unseen literary text
- Unit 4 Exploration and evaluation: interrogating how canonical intertexts shape, contest, and potentially undermine meaning in the contemporary lyric
- Band A performance: discerning close reading, discriminating theory application, incisive evaluative synthesis across all four ISMG criteria (10+10+10+5 = 35 marks)
