Each area below lists the concepts named in the syllabus, what the NESA exam asks of them, and the mistake that most often costs marks.

Global sustainability
This topic establishes sustainability as a concept and then tests it against one global economic activity you investigate in depth, such as viticulture, tourism, cotton or mining. You examine what sustainability means in contemporary practice, including its environmental, economic, social and governance dimensions and the way global goals frame it. For your chosen activity you trace spatial distribution, the nature of its operations, and the influences shaping it — technology, transport, government policy, markets and environmental constraints. Strategies for achieving sustainability are studied as concrete practices you can compare, from waste reduction and recycling to renewable energy, certification schemes and water efficiency. The final strand covers global forums and international cooperation: how agreements, agencies and conferences coordinate action across borders, and the limits on their power to enforce it.

What the exam asks
Multiple-choice items match a place's features to a global sustainability target. Structured questions ask you to describe the function of international forums, discuss how one named influence such as technology has affected your global economic activity, and compare two sustainability strategies used within it — so two strategies need to be prepared with evidence of what they actually achieved.
Where marks go missing
Treating the global economic activity as an industry overview. Questions ask about an influence on it, or a strategy applied within it, so the marks come from specific operations, locations and outcomes rather than a general account of how the industry works.

Rural and urban places
You investigate places at three scales. A rural place and an urban place are studied close-up: what gives each its character and identity, who lives there, and how it is linked economically, culturally, environmentally and by infrastructure to other places. Settlement dynamics explains the processes behind those patterns — growth and decline, movement between city and country, consolidation, and pressures on housing and transport. A large city outside Australia with more than five million people is studied as a contrasting case: its defining character, the challenges its residents face such as housing affordability, transport overcrowding, pollution or informal settlement, and the strategies used in response. Sustainable management runs across all three, assessed against the environmental, economic, social and governance pillars of sustainability.

What the exam asks
This topic carries some of the highest-mark structured questions. Expect to account for what gives a neighbourhood its identity, analyse how a rural town is connected to other places, outline your overseas city and describe two challenges its residents face, then evaluate two strategies for improving quality of life there in a 12-mark response demanding a judgement.
Where marks go missing
Choosing an overseas city you can only describe. The 12-mark question asks how effective two named strategies have been, which needs specific programs, dates and measurable outcomes; a general portrait of the city cannot support an evaluative judgement.

Ecosystems and global biodiversity
This topic explains how ecosystems work and why biodiversity is declining. Functioning covers the biophysical interactions between atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere, energy flow through trophic levels, nutrient cycling and dynamic equilibrium. Biogeographical processes explain distribution and change over time — succession, dispersal, adaptation, and the effects of barriers and isolation. From there you examine global biodiversity trends: population decline and extinction rates, habitat loss and fragmentation, invasive species, over-exploitation and climate change as drivers. Vulnerability and resilience asks why some ecosystems absorb disturbance while others collapse, drawing on size, connectivity, biodiversity and the intensity of pressure. Finally you consider the value of ecosystems, including utility, intrinsic, cultural, genetic and recreational value, and the protection strategies used to maintain them.

What the exam asks
Multiple-choice questions test flow-on effects through a food web and ecosystem service concepts. Short structured items ask you to identify a value of a pictured ecosystem or explain a global biodiversity trend and its drivers. The 20-mark extended response has been set here, asking you to explain both the nature and the complexity of ecosystem functioning, including interdependence and fragility.
Where marks go missing
Writing the extended response as a list of definitions. A 20-mark answer on ecosystem functioning must show the interactions working together — energy flow, nutrient cycling and equilibrium within one ecosystem you know — instead of defining each term in its own separate paragraph.

Area 4 of 8
Geographical tools
Tools are examined directly, not merely used in passing. Topographic map work covers grid and area references, distance along a route, local relief, aspect, gradient, and constructing and interpreting cross-sections including vertical exaggeration. Photograph work asks you to classify oblique aerial, vertical aerial and ground-level images and to read features from them such as housing density, vegetation cover, shadow direction and bearings. Précis maps require you to simplify a topographic extract into land-use zones and to explain why that simplification is useful. Climate graphs and synoptic weather maps are read for temperature and precipitation ranges, isobar patterns and wind direction. Statistical and graphical data extends to proportional and ternary graphs, where three-variable data points must be read and compared accurately.

What the exam asks
Tools dominate the multiple-choice section: distance, relief, aspect and gradient calculations, bearings, stream flow direction, image classification and ternary graph readings. They return in short-answer items that ask you to complete a missing quadrant of a précis map, calculate vertical exaggeration, or explain the value of a particular tool to a geographer.
Where marks go missing
Losing marks on scale and units rather than on geography. Distance answers that ignore the linear scale, relief calculations that misread the contour interval, and bearings taken from the wrong point are the most common errors, and each one costs a whole mark.

Geographical inquiry skills
Inquiry skills are the method behind fieldwork and research. Acquiring information covers framing a focus question, choosing primary methods such as transects, quadrats, field sketches, surveys, water or noise testing and land-use mapping, and selecting sites that will actually answer the question. Processing means organising what you collect into graphs, tables, annotated photographs and maps, and recognising the limitations and bias in your own data. Applying information involves interpreting patterns, testing them against secondary sources, and drawing conclusions that address the original question. Communicating covers geographical terminology, referencing and appropriate visual forms for an audience. Site selection is examined explicitly, so you must be able to argue why a location suits or does not suit a given investigation.

What the exam asks
Short-answer questions place you inside a hypothetical fieldwork scenario: identify a limitation of a proposed site for studying a forest–residential boundary, then justify a data-collection method suited to an alternative site. Justification means linking the method to the data the focus question needs, not simply naming a technique you have used before.
Where marks go missing
Naming a method without matching it to the investigation. A survey or a transect on its own earns little; the marks follow from stating what the method measures, why that data answers the focus question, and why the site allows it to be collected.

[Superseded – Geography Stage 6 Syllabus 2009, HSC 2015–2024] Ecosystems at Risk
This was one of three HSC topics under the 2009 syllabus and was last examined in 2024. It covered the functioning of ecosystems, the biophysical processes and interactions sustaining them, their vulnerability and resilience, and case studies of ecosystems at risk together with the human impacts and management strategies applied to them. Much of the content carries into the current Ecosystems and global biodiversity topic: trophic energy loss through a food chain, ecological succession, fragmentation and edge effects, and the traditional and contemporary management of a chosen ecosystem. If you are working through papers from 2024 and earlier, these questions remain sound practice for ecosystem understanding, though the case-study requirements and topic weightings differ from what you will sit.

What the exam asks
In papers up to 2024 this topic produced multiple-choice items on fragmentation and on energy loss between trophic levels, structured questions explaining biogeographical processes such as colonisation of a bare volcanic island, and a 20-mark extended-response option comparing the ecological sustainability of different management strategies.
Where marks go missing
Assuming these questions map one-to-one onto the current course. The ecological content transfers well, but questions written around the old case-study requirements are not a reliable guide to how the current syllabus frames ecosystems and biodiversity.

[Superseded – Geography Stage 6 Syllabus 2009, HSC 2015–2024] Urban Places
The 2009 syllabus's Urban Places topic, last examined in 2024, studied urban dynamics of change — suburbanisation, counterurbanisation, urban consolidation, decay and renewal — alongside world cities and the global networks connecting them. It required a case study of a large city in the developed world, a case study of a local urban area within your own region, and work on the growth of regional centres and hubs. Its themes overlap substantially with the current Rural and urban places topic, particularly the investigation of a large city and the character and challenges of settlements. The framing differs, though: the current syllabus builds its overseas city study around population size, resident challenges and quality-of-life strategies rather than around world-city hierarchy.

Where marks go missing
Reusing an old world-city case study unchanged. Current questions ask about residents' challenges and the effectiveness of strategies, so material organised around global network status answers a question that is no longer being asked.

[Superseded – Geography Stage 6 Syllabus 2009, HSC 2015–2024] People and Economic Activity
This topic, last examined in 2024, paired a local economic enterprise with a global economic activity. For the local enterprise you studied its internal linkages — the working relationships between the people inside it — its ecological dimension, and the locational and environmental factors influencing where and how it operated. For the global activity you examined its distribution, the influences acting on it including market preferences and global change, and its social impacts on communities. The current syllabus keeps an investigation of a global economic activity inside Global sustainability, so that half of the content remains directly relevant. The local-enterprise study, with its emphasis on internal workplace linkages, has no equivalent in the 2022 syllabus.
