HSC Scaling: Raw, Aligned and Scaled Marks Explained
NESA's reported HSC marks and UAC's scaled marks serve different purposes. NESA aligns results to performance standards. UAC uses raw HSC marks for scaling when calculating the ATAR; it does not simply scale the aligned mark on your results notice.

Three marks that should not be interchanged
Raw marks are the input to the processes. Aligned HSC marks express achievement against course standards and performance bands. Scaled marks allow UAC to compare results across courses for the ATAR. A higher aligned mark in one course does not by itself establish a higher ATAR contribution than a lower mark in another course.
HSC subject guides and verified historical figures
This covers the 32 Year 12 subjects in our HSC catalogue, not every course offered by the authority. Historical figures do not guarantee future scaling.
Common questions
Can I turn my reported HSC mark directly into a scaled mark?
Not with a fixed conversion on this page. UAC's scaling uses raw marks, whereas the HSC mark you receive is aligned.
Does choosing a course that scales well guarantee a better ATAR?
No. Your performance still matters. Choose courses with your interests, strengths and university prerequisites in mind, rather than relying on a historical scaling reputation.
