VCE Psychology Nervous System Practice Questions (2026)
These VCE Psychology nervous system practice questions are seven original VCAA-style short-answer prompts on the nervous system and stress from Units 3 and 4, each with brief guidance on what earns the marks. They cover the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions, the fight-flight-freeze response, the General Adaptation Syndrome, neurotransmitters and neurohormones, and conscious versus unconscious responses. Work through them under timed conditions, then mark yourself honestly.

How to use these VCE Psychology nervous system practice questions
Do not read these as a list of facts. Treat each one like a real exam item. Cover the guidance, write a full answer by hand, give yourself roughly one and a half minutes per mark, then reveal the guidance and mark your own response against it. The most useful habit in VCE Psychology is closing the gap between what you think you know and what you can actually write under pressure. A worked example you can recite is worth far less than a question you can answer cold.
For short-answer responses, the assessor is looking for specific psychological terms used correctly. Saying the body gets ready to react earns nothing. Saying the sympathetic nervous system increases heart rate, dilates the pupils and redirects blood to the skeletal muscles earns marks, because each clause is a distinct, assessable point.
Sympathetic versus parasympathetic: practice questions
Question 1 (3 marks)
Tilly hears a loud bang behind her while walking home. Within a second her heart is pounding and her mouth feels dry. With reference to the autonomic nervous system, explain the physiological changes occurring in Tilly's body.
What earns the marks: name the sympathetic nervous system (a subdivision of the autonomic nervous system) as the division activated; describe at least two correct physiological changes it causes, such as increased heart rate and reduced salivation (the dry mouth); and link these changes to preparing the body for action. A common error is naming the somatic nervous system, which controls voluntary skeletal muscle, not these automatic internal responses.
Question 2 (2 marks)
Once Tilly realises the bang was just a slammed door, she calms down over the next few minutes. Identify the division of the autonomic nervous system now dominant, and describe one change it produces.
What earns the marks: name the parasympathetic nervous system, and describe one correct counter-change such as decreasing heart rate or restoring digestion and salivation. The mark is lost if students say the parasympathetic division switches the sympathetic off instantly. It returns the body to a balanced state gradually, which is why Tilly stays jittery for a few minutes.
Fight-flight-freeze and conscious versus unconscious responses
Question 3 (4 marks)
Distinguish between the flight and freeze responses, and explain why both are described as unconscious rather than conscious responses to a stressor.
What earns the marks: describe flight as escaping or moving away from a threat with sympathetic activation; describe freeze as an immobilised, attentive state where the body is braced but not moving. For the last two marks, explain that both are unconscious responses because they are automatic and involuntary, triggered without deliberate awareness or intention, unlike a conscious response which is voluntary and goal-directed. Tie this back to the autonomic nervous system operating without conscious control.
Question 4 (2 marks)
Using an example, distinguish between a conscious response and an unconscious response in the context of reacting to a sudden threat.
What earns the marks: define a conscious response as a deliberate, voluntary reaction the person is aware of, such as choosing to call for help; define an unconscious response as an automatic, involuntary reaction such as flinching or the spinal reflex pulling a hand from a hot surface. One clear contrasting example covering both is what secures the second mark.
The General Adaptation Syndrome: practice questions
Question 5 (4 marks)
Outline the three stages of Selye's General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS), and explain what happens to the body's resistance to stress across the model.
What earns the marks: name and briefly describe alarm reaction (with shock then countershock, where resistance briefly drops below normal then rises), resistance (resistance stays above normal as the body copes, with elevated cortisol), and exhaustion (resources are depleted, resistance drops below normal and the person becomes vulnerable to illness). The fourth mark comes from describing the changing level of resistance across the stages, not just listing the names. A frequent loss is forgetting the shock and countershock substages of the alarm reaction.
Question 6 (3 marks)
Evaluate one strength and one limitation of the General Adaptation Syndrome as a model of the stress response.
What earns the marks: a valid strength, such as identifying a predictable biological pattern of physiological responses to stress that has research support; and a valid limitation, such as the model being based largely on animal (rat) research, or that it does not account for the psychological and cognitive factors in how individuals appraise stress. The command word is evaluate, so each point must be explained, not just named.
Neurotransmitters and neurohormones: practice question
Question 7 (4 marks)
Distinguish between a neurotransmitter and a neurohormone, and refer to one example of each that is relevant to the stress response.
What earns the marks: define a neurotransmitter as a chemical messenger released by a neuron that travels across the synaptic gap to affect a neighbouring neuron, and a neurohormone as a chemical messenger released by neurons into the bloodstream to act on distant target cells. For full marks, give a relevant example of each, such as noradrenaline acting as a neurotransmitter, and cortisol as the stress hormone (or adrenaline released by the adrenal glands) acting via the bloodstream. The distinction that earns the marks is the mode of transport: across a synapse versus through the blood.
