Across the three responses, poetry, prose fiction and drama must each be used exactly once.
Past papers on this subject span more than one syllabus. Papers written under an older one still work as practice, but the units and content areas they test have changed — the index labels every paper with the syllabus it was set under.

The units and content areas, one by one
Each area below lists the concepts named in the syllabus, what the SCSA exam asks of them, and the mistake that most often costs marks.
Unit 3 — Language, culture and identity
Unit 4 — Literature and social change
Area 1 of 2
Unit 3 — Language, culture and identity
How textual language and conventions participate in cultural meanings, identities and reader positioning.
What the exam asks
Close analysis, contextual reasoning and sustained interpretation across genres.
Where marks go missing
Do not treat context as background detached from language or list techniques without explaining their effects.
Area 2 of 2
Unit 4 — Literature and social change
How literary texts engage values, aesthetic traditions, changing contexts and critical perspectives.
What the exam asks
Extended literary argument using precise textual particulars and qualified interpretation.
Where marks go missing
Do not let a critical lens replace analysis of the primary work.
Common questions
How many raw marks are attempted?
85: 25 in close reading and 60 across two extended responses.
Why do weights total 100?
The 25-raw-mark close reading is weighted 30%, and the 60 raw extended marks are weighted 70%; raw marks and percentage weights are different measures.
Can any two Section Two questions be selected?
They must be two different questions and must use the two genres not used in Section One, so that all three genres are used exactly once.
Are the worked texts every prescribed option?
No. Blake, Macbeth, Pride and Prejudice and Lawson form a selected teaching corpus. Students must use works prescribed and studied by their school.
