Answer: Worked solution
The sentence makes official closure incomplete. ‘At closing time’ and ‘locked’ establish a completed institutional action, but the adversative ‘but’ transfers continuing agency to the portraits. Personification in ‘kept lending’ gives the represented people a duration exceeding the museum’s schedule, while ‘lending’ remains unstable: names may preserve identity, or the institution may be borrowing authority from people it displays. ‘The dark’ can suggest neglect, after-hours continuity or histories not fully illuminated. The strongest reading is therefore that institutional control over access cannot fully contain the memory it curates. Yet the sentence does not prove the museum is wholly oppressive; locking may be ordinary procedure. Its force lies in the tension between practical closure and figurative continuation.
Marking guide (10 marks). Award 2 marks for a clear interpretation of institutional memory; 2 for analysing the closing/continuing temporal contrast; 2 for explaining agency in ‘portraits’ and ‘lending’; 2 for integrating darkness or syntax into the argument; and 2 for a credible alternative or qualification grounded in the wording.
