1 mark: a pain receptor detects the stimulus and a sensory/afferent neuron carries information towards the spinal cord. 1 mark: a spinal interneuron relays/integrates the signal and communicates with a motor neuron. 1 mark: the motor/efferent neuron activates a skeletal muscle effector whose contraction withdraws the foot. 1 mark: the spinal response can begin before conscious awareness, while information also travels to the brain. Do not require a conscious decision as the trigger for the withdrawal.
