Sample question
A bricklayer mixes render using cement, lime and sand in the ratio 1 : 1 : 6 by volume. A job requires 96 litres of render mix. Calculate the volume of cement, the volume of lime and the volume of sand needed, in litres.

Answer: Worked solution
The ratio 1 : 1 : 6 has 1 + 1 + 6 = 8 parts in total.
One part = 96 ÷ 8 = 12 L.
Cement = 1 × 12 = 12 L
Lime = 1 × 12 = 12 L
Sand = 6 × 12 = 72 L
Check: 12 + 12 + 72 = 96 L, as required.
Exam technique: find the total number of parts first and divide once — do not work out 1/6 or 6/8 of 96 without deciding what the 'whole' is. Include the unit (L) on every line, because a bare '12, 12, 72' can lose a mark when the question names the units it wants.
