Answer: Worked solution
The claim does not ban events from a paragraph — events are the evidence — but it does subordinate them to an idea. In practice, the paragraph opens with a topic sentence that makes a claim answering the set topic, for example that the text presents loyalty as something performed in public and abandoned in private. Every sentence after that must either supply evidence for the claim or explain how the text produces it. Evidence should be short and embedded: a phrase, a recurring image, a structural choice such as where a chapter breaks, a shift in who is narrating. The explanation that follows is where the marks sit, because it must discuss construction — why the writer places this moment here, what the diction implies, whose perspective controls the scene, what the text withholds. That is the level at which ideas and values actually live, since a text conveys values through what it rewards, punishes and dwells on rather than through statement. The paragraph then closes by returning to the topic's own terms, so the marker can see the argument has moved forward rather than been illustrated. A reliable test on rereading: if a reader who had never studied the text could still follow the argument, the paragraph is analytical; if all they would learn is the plot, it is retelling.
