Answer: Worked solution
Use a defined range of nitrate concentrations, including an appropriate reference, and measure change in root length over a fixed seven-day interval (1 mark). Randomly allocate independently prepared pots to concentrations, with several pots per treatment; seedlings sharing a pot are subsamples rather than independent treatment units (1). Match initial seedling age/size because developmental state affects growth (1), and maintain light and temperature because they influence metabolism and growth independently of nitrate (1). Apply the same measurement landmarks and timing, recording each pot’s outcome and any deviations (1). Display independent pot values and treatment means on labelled axes, then limit the conclusion to the tested conditions and account for biological variation (1). A hypothesis predicts the comparison; it does not predetermine the result.
