Refer to the constructed 1:25 000 topographic map extract of Bardsley Creek below (contour interval 20 m; grid squares are 1 km × 1 km; six-figure grid references give eastings before northings). This is an original practice extract, not a real place.
| Feature | Grid reference | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Old Mill Bridge (river crossing, Bardsley River) | 316 205 | Elevation approx. 32 m; floodplain pasture on both banks |
| Bardsley Creek town centre (shops, houses) | 342 187 | Elevation approx. 45 m; nucleated around the river and railway |
| St Aidan's Hospital | 349 181 | Elevation approx. 45 m; flat cleared land, contours widely spaced |
| Harrow Junction railway station | 368 156 | Elevation approx. 28 m; open farmland around the line |
| Foothill Lookout (spot height) | 312 219 | Elevation 210 m; contours tightly packed on its southern side (steep slope) |
| Bardsley Quarry (disused) | 305 160 | Elevation approx. 55 m rim; steep-sided pit, cleared and partly unstable ground around it |
Describe the route of Riverside Road from the Old Mill Bridge (316 205) to Harrow Junction railway station (368 156), referring to compass direction, straight-line distance and the land use it crosses. (5 marks)

Answer: Worked solution
From the Old Mill Bridge (316 205) to Harrow Junction (368 156), the easting increases by about 5.2 km and the northing decreases by about 4.9 km, so the road runs on a consistent south-easterly bearing for its whole length (1 mark: direction). Using the grid, the straight-line distance is approximately √(5.2² + 4.9²) ≈ 7.1 km (1 mark: distance, allow 6.5–7.5 km). For the first section the road crosses open floodplain pasture beside the Bardsley River, low-lying and used for grazing (1 mark: land use 1). It then passes along the northern edge of Bardsley Creek town, close to St Aidan's Hospital, through the built-up residential and services area (1 mark: land use 2). For the remaining section south-east of the town it returns to open farmland before reaching the railway line and station at Harrow Junction (1 mark: land use 3). Total: 5 marks.
