This paper covers
- Bivariate data: scatterplots, Pearson's r, R-squared, least-squares regression, residuals (Mackay cable cost vs length)
- Time series: seasonal indices, deseasonalising, centred moving averages, trend and forecasting (desalination water demand)
- Arithmetic and geometric sequences and recurrence relations (cable-laying schedule, maintenance cost escalation)
- Earth geometry: latitude/longitude, great-circle distance, time zones (marina sensor network)
- Compound interest with non-annual compounding via recurrence (infrastructure bond)
- Reducing-balance loans, amortisation, annuities and perpetuities (marina financing)
- Graph and network theory: adjacency matrices, Euler's formula, Eulerian/Hamiltonian graphs, Dijkstra's algorithm, TSP
- Minimum spanning trees (Kruskal's and Prim's) for underwater cable installation
- Network flow: maximum-flow minimum-cut theorem (desalination plant pipe network)
- Critical path analysis: forward/backward passes, EST/EFT/LST/LFT, float, critical activities
Students are permitted to bring into the examination the materials normally allowed for this subject. Answer all questions in the spaces provided.
