This paper covers
- Theorised close reading of an unseen nineteenth-century realist novel excerpt depicting a colonial encounter in the Pacific Islands
- Text-centred approaches: narrative technique, free indirect discourse, irony, focalisation, prose rhythm, imagery, syntactic patterning
- World-context-centred approaches: postcolonial theory (Said's Orientalism, Spivak's subaltern, Bhabha's ambivalence and mimicry), colonial discourse analysis, ideology critique
- Author-centred approach engaged as productive tension against postcolonial reading: authorial intention, biographical/historical context, realist conventions and their ideological limits
- Evaluation and synthesis: comparative assessment of the productivity and limits of each theoretical approach applied to the passage
- Extended essay form, scholarly register, literary-critical metalanguage, QCAA ISMG Band A standard (Criteria 1–4, 35 marks total)
