Sample question
A coastal steel handrail will be exposed to salt spray. Explain how a protection and maintenance strategy should respond to the environment. Compare a barrier coating with galvanising without claiming either eliminates inspection.

Answer: Worked solution

Salt and moisture can support electrochemical corrosion. A suitable barrier coating limits contact between steel and the environment, but a damaged film may expose the substrate. Galvanising adds a zinc coating that provides a barrier and can sacrificially protect small exposed regions while sufficient zinc remains. The strategy should specify suitable preparation and coverage, allow inspection of vulnerable joints and damaged surfaces, and include timely repair. Compare service conditions and maintenance access rather than treating either treatment as permanent immunity. The question is a conceptual material-protection exercise, not a complete specification for a real safety-critical installation. Verification step: inspect edges, holes, weld-adjacent areas and water traps because local damage can govern while broad surfaces look sound. Record coating continuity and zinc condition separately. If a small scratched test panel is used, its result supports only comparable preparation and exposure; it cannot establish the handrail's remaining structural capacity without section-loss and connection evidence.
