This paper covers
- Core: continuity and change — how youth subcultures and music genres persist, adapt, fracture and revive across time, examined through socialisation, norm negotiation, and identity construction frameworks.
- Depth studies: Personal and Social Identity (how music subculture membership shapes individual and group identity, belonging, and othering) and Belief Systems and Ideologies (how subcultures encode, transmit and contest values, norms, and power through music genres and scene rituals).
- Methodological and ethical literacy: selecting appropriate research methods (participant observation, interviews, textual/lyrical analysis), evaluating positionality, and applying course concepts (norms, values, social control, hegemony, intersectionality) to contemporary Australian and global examples.
Students are permitted to bring into the examination the materials normally allowed for this subject. Answer all questions in the spaces provided.
