Is It Worth Buying Year 12 Notes? A VCE and HSC Guide

Buying Year 12 notes is worth considering only when they fill a gap your free materials leave. ATARMAxxing offers notes with model exams, but start with a preview and identify what you would actually use.

Short answer: buying notes is worth it only when it fills a specific gap that the free material cannot. Use the free official past papers first. Then buy for one of three reasons: you need answers explained the way the board marks, you have run out of practice papers, or you need condensed notes for a topic you never properly learned.

If none of those applies, save your money and sit another past paper.

What free material should you use before buying notes?

Every state's board publishes past exams and marking material free of charge, and they are the closest thing to your real exam. Find yours on the past papers index. Your school's own trial papers and your teacher's feedback are free too, and often underused.

Official reference: VCAA study designs.

How do you identify the resource you actually need?

Name the problem your next resource must solve before choosing a product.

  • "I do not understand why I lost marks." You need explanations, not more questions. Look for marking guides that show where each mark is awarded.
  • "I have done all the past papers." You need more full-length practice in the same format. Trial-exam packs and practice-exam hubs fill this gap.
  • "I never really learned this topic." You need condensed notes or teaching. A study guide, a video platform or a good set of student notes fills this gap.

If you cannot name a gap, buying more material is usually procrastination with a receipt.

Can bought notes replace timed practice?

No; notes can support understanding, but you still need to practise producing answers under the relevant conditions. Reading a beautiful set of notes feels productive, but exams reward recall under time pressure and applying content to unseen questions. No set of notes, however good, does that for you.

Whatever you buy, the core of your preparation should still be sitting full papers under exam conditions and marking them honestly. See how to use trial exams properly and our study tips for Year 12 exams.

Is ATAR Notes worth it?

An ATAR Notes resource may suit you if its course coverage, sample and format fill a gap in your existing materials. They are worth it if your gap is condensed theory and you will actually work through them. They will not, on their own, give you lots of full exams to sit.

Published prices are on the ATAR Notes comparison.

Are Neap trial exams worth it?

A Neap trial paper may be useful when it matches your course and you need another full assessment task to practise. They are worth it if your gap is more practice papers. Ask your teacher first which papers your school will set, so you do not buy the one you are about to sit.

Is Edrolo worth it?

Edrolo may suit a student who needs video explanations and has access to the relevant school course. If your school already provides it, use it. Buying it yourself is worth it mainly if your gap is being taught the content, rather than more exam practice.

When is ATARMAxxing an option?

ATARMAxxing is built for the "more papers, explained properly" gap. Each Year 12 subject hub has 20 full-length model exams, each with a mark-by-mark answer guide, plus revision notes, 64 practice questions with worked solutions and flashcards. It is a one-time price per subject with no subscription: A$40 list price, and the pricing page shows the current offer.

Every subject has a free preview, and you can download free notes before deciding anything. If your gap is something else, one of the options on our comparison hub may suit you better.

What should you check before paying?

Check the course match, sample, explanations and total price before paying.

  1. Have you sat and marked the recent official past papers? If not, start there.
  2. Can you name the gap? If not, do not buy yet.
  3. Is the product written for your current study design or syllabus?
  4. Can you preview it?
  5. Will you realistically use it before your exams start?

ATARMAxxing is independent and is not affiliated with VCAA, NESA or any other assessment board, or with any company named on this page.
