Active Recall and Spaced Repetition: VCE & HSC 2026

Active recall and spaced repetition are the two study techniques with the strongest research backing for VCE and HSC. Active recall means testing yourself to pull information out of memory instead of reading it back in. Spaced repetition means reviewing that material across spreading intervals rather than in one long session. Used together, they build memory that holds up under exam pressure.

Why rereading and highlighting let you down

Blurting

Pick a topic, close everything, and write down everything you can remember on a blank page. Then open your notes and mark what you missed in a different colour. The gaps are your study list. Flashcards done properly

Write a question on one side and the answer on the other, then answer out loud before you flip. The key is to attempt the answer first, not to read both sides. Keep cards short and specific. One fact or one definition per card beats a card crammed with a whole topic.

Practice questions and past papers

Exam questions are active recall with a mark scheme attached. Working through VCAA-style or NESA-style questions under timed conditions forces retrieval and trains exam technique at the same time. You do not need a complicated system. A workable week might look like this: learn or condense new content in one block, convert it to flashcards and questions in a second block, and spend a third block on timed practice questions and past papers with honest self-marking. Layer in short spaced reviews of older topics, ten to fifteen minutes at a time, so nothing from earlier in the year quietly disappears.
