Answer: Worked solution
(a) The IV is reading condition: reading while monitoring notification tones versus the defined comparison condition. The DV is delayed comprehension, operationalised as the score on the same timed comprehension test after the stated delay.
(b) Tone monitoring divides limited attention and forces switching away from semantic integration of the text. Visual reception can still occur, but weaker attended processing reduces encoding and therefore later retrieval.
(c) Randomly allocate participants to conditions so pre-existing reading ability is less likely to differ systematically. Standardise passage, exposure time, device volume, testing delay and instructions so material difficulty or presentation cannot explain the score difference. A baseline reading measure could additionally check group equivalence.
Marking: IV1; operational DV1; divided-attention mechanism1; encoding-to-retrieval consequence1; first relevant control1 plus named rival explanation1; second distinct control1 plus named rival explanation1.
