Media languages (Units 3 and 4)

The system of communication and the codes and conventions every answer rests on. Unit 3 adds the artistic and cultural benefits of media work, auteur figures and personal expression, the manipulation of narrative elements and structures, media aesthetics and theme, and techniques that challenge expectations. Unit 4 adds the suitability of particular media for social or political comment, changing distribution networks, intended audience, persuasive techniques, and selection, emphasis and omission to construct point of view.

Representation (Units 3 and 4)

How representations of people, places, events and ideas are constructed to seem natural. Unit 3 asks how representations are built and how media art can challenge them; Unit 4 asks how representations and their values are made persuasive and how stereotypes are constructed and naturalised, with real impact on audiences and groups.

Audience (Units 3 and 4)

Media theories (the marking keys name hypodermic needle, uses and gratifications, reception theory, two-step flow, cultivation and agenda setting) used to explain audience response and influence; how cultural contexts and values shape interpretation (Unit 3); how media reinforces or challenges perceptions, values and attitudes, and how media trends change media use (Unit 4).

Industry (Units 3 and 4)

Media producers and production contexts. Unit 3: the challenges independent producers face, how producers meet niche audiences' expectations, aesthetics within production contexts and cultural influences on content. Unit 4: how producers construct perceptions of issues; editorial control, funding, distribution and regulation; propaganda and agenda setting; formal and informal censorship.

Production (Units 3 and 4)

Ideas and reflective practice, controls and constraints (safety, copyright and permissions, ethics, time, expertise, technology), skills in the production roles and constructing a production to communicate theme for a purpose, context and audience. Assessed mainly through the practical examination, but the written paper can ask how this content applies (2024 asked how other media work could inform your own production).

Unit 3 - Media art

Context for half the examinable content: contemporary and traditional media art such as art cinema, independent film, national cinema, anime, gaming, interactive entertainment, photographic art and AI-generated content. Examinable content is set in the context of media art.

Unit 4 - Power and persuasion

Context for the other half: persuasive media including documentary, news and world-event reporting, propaganda, photographic essays, national cinema and AI-generated content, and how they reflect, challenge and shape audience values and attitudes.
