Sample question
A survey of 200 Year 12 students recorded where each student lives and how each student usually travels to school. Of the 120 students living in inner suburbs, 78 usually travel by public transport and 42 do not. Of the 80 students living in outer suburbs, 24 usually travel by public transport and 56 do not. Percentage the two-way table by suburb type and describe the association between suburb type and usual travel to school.

Answer: Worked solution
Percentaging by column (suburb type is the explanatory variable, so each suburb type is percentaged to 100%):
Inner suburbs: public transport 78/120 = 65.0%, not public transport 42/120 = 35.0%.
Outer suburbs: public transport 24/80 = 30.0%, not public transport 56/80 = 70.0%.
There is an association between suburb type and usual travel to school. A much higher percentage of inner-suburb students usually travel to school by public transport (65.0%) than of outer-suburb students (30.0%), a difference of 35 percentage points. Equivalently, most outer-suburb students (70.0%) do not use public transport, while most inner-suburb students do.
Exam technique: percentage across the categories of the explanatory variable so the percentages within each suburb type add to 100%, quote at least one matching pair of percentages with the variable names and the context, and state that the difference indicates an association. Do not claim that living in an inner suburb causes public transport use.
