Answer: Worked solution
Similarity. The two markets value Aboriginal cultural experiences almost equally: 46% of German and 49% of US visitors rated them 'very important', a gap of only 3 percentage points. Both markets would therefore respond to promotion of Aboriginal-guided experiences.
Difference 1 – experience of Australia. German visitors are mainly repeat visitors to Australia: only 38% were on their first visit, so 62% had been before. In contrast, 61% of US visitors were on their first visit, so only 39% were repeat visitors.
Difference 2 – independence of travel. German visitors travel independently: 71% self-drove and only 22% joined a guided tour. US visitors relied more on organised travel: 58% joined a guided tour and only 29% self-drove, a 42-percentage-point gap in self-driving.
Difference 3 – length of stay and travel party. German visitors stayed an average of 6.4 nights, more than twice the US average of 2.9 nights (about 2.2 times as long). Germans mostly travelled as couples (52% compared with 34%), while US visitors were more than three times as likely to bring children (27% compared with 8%).
Mark allocation: 1–2 marks for describing a similarity supported by quoted figures from both markets; up to 4 marks for describing distinct differences, each supported by specific figures for both markets (1 mark per accurately quoted and compared difference). Responses that list figures without stating the comparison, or describe only one market, cannot gain full marks. Total 6 marks.
