Answer: Worked solution

The armistice formalised the cessation of fighting in circumstances shaped by military defeat, exhaustion and the leadership’s recognition that the war could not continue successfully. Treating the civilian signature as the cause of defeat reverses this relationship. It also gives later claims of betrayal the status of an established explanation instead of examining why those claims became politically useful.

The distinction matters because the new republican politicians inherited responsibility for accepting an unwelcome settlement without having created all the conditions producing it. Opponents could associate them with defeat while obscuring the role of military decisions and wartime government. That association damaged the republic’s legitimacy among groups receptive to nationalist explanations.

However, identifying the distortion does not prove that every German rejected the republic or that collapse was inevitable. Elections, constitutional change and active defence of parliamentary government demonstrate competing responses. A stronger explanation connects the inherited military situation with the political struggle over responsibility, rather than allowing a later accusation to replace the chronology.

Original practice marking guide: one mark for each distinct achievement. Credit equivalent supported reasoning; do not award the same point twice.

  1. Distinguish military defeat from the formal cessation of fighting.
  2. Explain the significance of military exhaustion or leadership recognition.
  3. Identify the reversal of cause and consequence in a betrayal account.
  4. Explain the republic’s inherited association with accepting defeat.
  5. Connect that association with opponents’ attacks on legitimacy.
  6. Qualify the impact by recognising support for the republic or contingent outcomes.
