Original lecture transcript (Text 1, excerpt)
'Today I want to explain why bees matter to food security. First, pollination: about a third of the food we eat depends, at least in part, on insect pollinators, and honeybees are the best known. Second, the threats. The three biggest are habitat loss, pesticide use, and a parasite called the varroa mite, which was detected in New South Wales in 2022. Third, solutions. Farmers can plant flowering strips beside crops, councils can reduce spraying in parks, and home gardeners can grow native flowering plants.'

Answer: Worked solution
(a) Pollination: about 1/3 of food eaten depends (at least partly) on insect pollinators, e.g. honeybees.
(b) Threats: habitat loss; pesticide use; varroa mite (parasite).
(c) Varroa mite: a parasite; detected in NSW in 2022.
(d) Farmers: plant flowering strips beside crops.
Mark allocation (4 marks): 1 mark for each correctly completed row. (a) needs the fraction (one third) linked to insect pollination; (b) needs all three threats for the mark; (c) needs both 'parasite' and the place or year (NSW, 2022); (d) needs the farmer action specifically, not the council or gardener action. Notes may use abbreviations and symbols, but numbers and place names must be exact. Copying whole sentences is unnecessary and wastes listening time.
