Neap trial exams vs ATARMAxxing: are they worth it?
Neap pricing checked October 2026, from Neap’s own site. Prices change — if the figures here no longer match theirs, believe theirs.
Neap is a publisher of trial exams and diagnostic topic tests for VCE, HSC, QCE and WACE, plus Australian Curriculum Years 9–10. Its site is aimed mainly at schools, says it is trusted by over 1,000 schools, and describes its material as designed by leading teachers. If your school sets Neap trials, you may already have sat some of them.
As at October 2026, Neap's own site does not list prices or how many exams are in each title. It points you to the ATAR Notes shop to browse and order books, so check the price and contents on the product page for the subject you want before you buy.
ATARMAxxing is a different shape of product: one online purchase per subject with 20 full-length model exams and a mark-by-mark answer guide for each, plus 20 revision note sets, 64 practice questions with worked solutions and 200 flashcards. Printed trial papers from an established publisher and a large online bank of model exams do different jobs, and plenty of students use both.

Where Neap is better
No product wins on everything, and a comparison that pretends otherwise is not worth reading. Here is what Neap genuinely does better than we do.
- A trial-exam publisher that schools use (its site says over 1,000 schools), so the format may be familiar to your teachers.
- Printed papers, so you can sit a trial on paper, under time, the way you will in the exam hall.
- Titles for Units 1 & 2 as well as Units 3 & 4 in several subjects, so you can practise before Year 12.
- Diagnostic topic tests as well as full trial exams, so practice can be targeted at one topic at a time.
Where ATARMAxxing is better
- A published price you can see before you buy, with notes, questions and flashcards in the same purchase.
- 20 full-length model exams per subject, each with a mark-by-mark answer guide.
- Covers SACE and TCE as well as VCE, HSC, QCE and WACE.
- You can preview every subject free without entering a card.
Our exams are original full-length model exams written to the public study designs and syllabuses — they are not past papers. Every subject hub also links to the official VCAA, NESA or QCAA past papers, which those authorities publish free.
Neap vs ATARMAxxing — your questions
Are Neap trial exams worth it?
They suit students who want printed trial papers from an established publisher, and they are worth asking your school about first, because many schools buy them to run trials. Whatever you use, the official past papers your state's board publishes free are the best place to start.
Can students buy Neap trial exams?
Neap's own site is aimed mainly at schools, and it links to the ATAR Notes shop to browse and order books. Check that shop's product page for what is available to individual students and at what price.
How many exams are in a Neap pack?
Neap's own site does not state this as at October 2026, and it can differ by title. Check the product page for the subject and units you want. For comparison, each ATARMAxxing subject includes 20 full-length model exams.
Does Neap cover SACE or TCE?
As at October 2026, Neap's site lists VCE, HSC, QCE and WACE, plus Australian Curriculum Years 9–10, and does not list SACE or TCE. ATARMAxxing covers all six Year 12 curricula.
What is an alternative to Neap trial exams?
Options include the free official past papers from your state's board, other publishers' trial exams, Cambridge Checkpoints, Excel Success One for the HSC, ATAR Notes topic tests, and ATARMAxxing's online model exams with mark-by-mark answer guides.
