2026 WACE Geography exam: What to learn from last year's mistakes
WACE Geography is on Wednesday 11 November at 2 pm, WA time.
Last year's mean was 57.71%. Both extended-response means were below 50%. I've gone through the 2025 examiner report: mapping precision, correct terminology and explanations supported by accurate evidence are useful places to focus.
Here are four revision targets.
1. Questions 1–12: Map skills need calculation practice
Where students went wrong: Some struggled with grid references, area calculations and converting scales between sources.
What they should have done: Apply the map conventions precisely and keep the units consistent.
An original practice check: on a 1:25,000 map, 1 cm represents 250 m, but 1 cm² represents 62,500 m². Area needs the squared scale conversion. Practise a distance and an area calculation together so you do not carry the linear conversion into the wrong task.
2. Skills questions: Make the sketch accurate
Where students needed improvement: The report recommends practice with slope shapes, sketch maps and cross-sections, not just recognition of familiar features.
What they should have done: Translate the source information carefully into the requested representation.
My revision drill: use a light grid to transfer a sketch map, then check relative positions, proportions and labels against the source. For a cross-section, plot the contour intersections before joining them. Check the axes and scale instead of drawing the landscape from memory.
3. Short response: Use the geographical concept precisely
Where students went wrong: Some could not demonstrate accurate understanding of key concepts. The report distinguishes the broader transportation challenge from traffic congestion as one part of it.
What they should have done: Match the concept, command verb and number of examples requested.
My answer check: write the definition's essential components in your plan, then apply them to the source. If asked for one example, choose your strongest and explain it fully. Adding several weak alternatives is not a substitute for selecting the right one.
4. Extended response: Explain the mechanism
Where students went wrong: Some Unit 3 answers became broad discussions instead of explanations, with inaccurate data or examples. Demographic questions were also challenging.
What they should have done: Answer the specific relationship asked about, using accurate supporting evidence.
My planning routine: claim → cause or process → consequence → case evidence. Read the paragraph backwards from its conclusion: have you shown how you got there? A named place or statistic only helps when it supports that explanation.
Use last year's paper to diagnose skills, not to assume this year's topics will rotate in a predictable order.
