Question 1 (4 marks)

Define a 'business objective' and explain one reason a private limited company might prioritise increasing market share over maximising short-term profit.

Show the mark scheme

1 mark for a correct definition: a stated goal a business intends to achieve within a set timeframe. 1 mark for identifying increasing market share as the objective. 2 marks for explaining a reason, e.g. a larger share builds brand dominance and long-term customer loyalty, allowing higher profits later even if short-term profit is sacrificed now.

Question 2 (6 marks)

Compare two management styles a manager could use when implementing an unpopular change in the workplace.

Show the mark scheme

3 marks per style (definition + a strength and a limitation in this context), for 2 styles. Typical pairing: autocratic (manager decides and directs; fast, clear, but risks low morale and resistance) versus consultative or participative (manager seeks employee input before deciding; builds buy-in and reduces resistance, but is slower). Full marks require explicit comparison rather than two separate descriptions.
